A predator move that looks almost absurd
A dead sunfish drifting through the Gulf of California met a very strange end: orcas lined up and used coordinated body checks to break it apart. That alone’s enough to make you blink twice. Most people picture killer whales as efficient hunters tearing into living prey, but this footage shows something else entirely. The whales were not simply biting and stripping tissue. They were hitting a carcass hard enough to fragment it.
That difference matters. In ordinary feeding, orcas usually work a body methodically. They peel off flesh, pick at soft tissue and leave bones and tougher parts behind. Interesting. Here, the goal looked more brute-force than surgical. One whale held the sunfish in place while another slammed into it, turning a single carcass into smaller pieces that were easier to handle. It’s the sort of thing that sounds almost comic until you remember the animals involved. A killer whale is, after all, a very large marine problem.
The oddity is the visual punchline, but the behavior itself is serious business: a hunting species using teamwork to process food in a way that looks improvised, yet may have been learned.
That last part is where the science gets interesting. Orcas are not known for following a rigid, one-size-fits-all feeding script. Different pods develop different habits, and younger whales often pick up techniques by watching older family members. In other words, these body-check moves could be social knowledge, passed along the same way a family recipe is, only with more impact and far less kitchen safety.
Naturally, the footage later appeared in a peer-reviewed ethology paper, which gives the scene a more formal frame than the video alone might suggest. It wasn’t a one-off splashy clip meant for shock value. In short, it was treated as evidence of behavior worth recording, comparing and placing alongside other feeding tactics seen in killer whales.
What makes the scene funny, in a dark sort of way, is the mismatch between the animal and the method. Orcas already have enough tools to feed without turning dinner into confetti. Yet here they were, using synchronized force on a dead sunfish as if the old rules had been replaced by a more aggressive manual. Clever? Definitely. A bit absurd? Also yes. But it remains predator behavior, plain and simple, with a messy little twist that points to how flexible these whales can be.

Two filmed encounters, separated by a year
The first scene was captured in mid-2024 off San José del Cabo, and it already had enough going on to make a clean chronology feel a little absurd. A tourism operator on the water filmed a pod of roughly five orcas that included adult females, one male, and a younger animal. They had just taken a devil ray. Then the focus shifted to a sunfish carcass: one adult female held it in place while the male drove into it with a hard body check. That sequence matters, because it wasn’t a chase ending in a clean kill. The fish was already dead, and the rough treatment came after the whales had handled another large prey item.
What looks like one weird encounter starts to look a lot more deliberate once the same move turns up again in the same part of Mexico.
A peer-reviewed ethology paper later laid out the details of that first event, and a separate project page pulls together the sunfish footage and related observations from the region in one place: the ethology study and an orca research page on sunfishes. The paper’s value here isn’t that it turns the ocean into a soap opera. It’s that it gives the behavior a date, a place, a cast list, and a sequence of actions that other people can compare against later sightings.
That later sighting came in late-2025 near Isla Cerralvo, and the setup was uncomfortably familiar. Another tourism operator recorded a similar scene in the same broad stretch of Mexico. One orca held onto a sunfish while another slammed into it. Different day, different boat, same basic move. If this had only happened once, it’d be tempting to shrug and call it a rough bit of feeding. Twice is harder to dismiss, especially when the choreography looks so close from one encounter to the next.
In both cases, the carcasses were already dead before the impact landed. The whales weren’t smashing living sunfish around for the fun of it, at least not in any obvious sense. And the soft internal tissue had likely been removed before the high-force hit, which makes the collision look more like processing than killing. Good news. That’s a useful distinction. Orcas already know how to work over prey they’ve caught. They slice, tear, strip and share. What’s unusual here’s the extra violence after the useful parts seem to be gone. The body check appears to come at the end of the meal, not the start.
The repetition also narrows the question. This wasn’t one pod improvising in a single encounter and never repeating itself. It was the same species, in the same region, using the same basic technique on the same kind of prey, more than a year apart. Two tourism operators happened to catch versions of the same thing on camera. That kind of match doesn’t prove the whales planned it the same way each time, but it does make the behavior look repeatable rather than accidental.
And that’s where the story gets interesting for anyone following orca hunting behavior. Wild footage is often messy by nature. The angle is wrong, the water’s rough, the animal ducks under at exactly the inconvenient moment. Here, the roughness actually helps. The clips show enough to pin down a pattern without pretending the whales were running a lab trial. In one instance, a female braces the sunfish while a male crashes into it. In the other, one whale grips the carcass while another delivers the hit. Same region, same prey type, same general sequence. The ocean does love a rerun, apparently.
How killer whales process a sunfish

They seem to have taken a familiar processing sequence and cranked up the force. Instead of nibbling and trimming, one whale appears to hold the carcass steady while another drives into it, turning a single body into pieces that are much easier to share. In practical terms, that can save time. A carcass that’s broken apart’s simpler to handle than one floppy slab of fish skin and tissue.
The tail may matter here more than it first appears. Sunfish have a very odd shape, with a short, stubby body and a tail that can act like a handle of sorts when a whale needs to brace the carcass. If one orca grips near the tail while another slams from the side, the fish may absorb the impact in a way that spreads the stress through the body rather than sending it cleanly away. That makes the whole thing easier to split. So the odd little drama in the water comes down to this: a sunfish isn’t being hunted in the usual sense, and it isn’t being toyed with by accident either. The whales appear to be processing a dead body with a tactic that blends restraint, timing and a lot of blunt force. Is why they’d do it in the first place, given the next question, naturally.
Training, play, or family business?
Once the sunfish’s been turned into a floating mess of parts, the obvious question is no longer how the whales did it. It’s why they bothered. The answer’s probably messier than a single neat explanation, which is exactly what makes the behavior so interesting. In the paper that described the two Mexico encounters, the authors floated a few possibilities and none of them has to exclude the others. That’s pretty normal for orcas. They’re the kind of marine predators that can make a feeding move look like a lesson, a shared chore, and a bit of roughhousing all at once.
One possibility is that younger whales are learning how to handle awkward prey. A sunfish is a weird package. It’s huge, flat and not built like the usual meal a young orca might practice on. Breaking it into smaller chunks could make the carcass easier for a juvenile to mouth, tear and share. In the first filmed event, a younger whale was in the group, which makes that reading feel plausible. If an adult can show a calf how to pin down a carcass and turn it into manageable pieces, that’s a useful trick to pick up. Not glamorous. Useful.
Sometimes the smartest feeding move is also the simplest teaching tool.
There’s also the family angle. Orcas live in tight social units, and food gets passed around in ways that can look a lot like provisioning. If an adult female or male smashes a carcass into smaller portions while a juvenile hangs nearby, that may be a practical way of making dinner easier for a smaller mouth. In the San José del Cabo sighting, the group included an adult female, a male, and a younger animal, so the scene already had that family-table feel to it. The adult does the heavy work, the younger whale gets access to the leftovers, and everyone stays involved. For killer whales, that sort of shared meal may be as ordinary as it’s potent.
But feeding and teaching don’t exhaust the possibilities. Orcas also play with prey, and not in the cute, harmless way a human might think of play. They bat things around, carry them, drop them, retrieve them and then do it again. A dead sunfish can still be a physical object to shove, brace, or ram. Then the line between handling and play gets thin fast, if the carcass is already lifeless. The behavior can look absurd from the shore, but that doesn’t mean it’s random. It may simply be one of those whale habits that sits in the overlap between practice and fun, assuming whales experience anything close to fun in the human sense.
The timing matters here. In both filmed encounters, the whales had already eaten other prey before the sunfish got smashed into pieces. That detail weakens the idea that this was a desperate attempt to put food on the table. Hungry animals usually do whatever gets calories fastest. These whales had already fed, which makes the extra ramming look less like emergency hunting and more like a processing technique that could also serve other purposes. There’s room for a younger whale to watch, an adult to shape the carcass, and the group to keep working together around the same meal, once the pressure to eat is off.
That flexibility is classic orca behavior. The same motion can do several jobs at once, depending on who’s present and what the group needs. A body check can break food apart, show a youngster how it’s done, or keep the pod occupied around a carcass they’ve already claimed. None of those explanations cancels the others. With killer whales, the smarter reading’s often that the answer is “yes” to more than one thing.
Why this matters beyond one shredded fish
A scene like this can look absurd at first glance. One whale holds the carcass steady. Another slams into it. A sunfish comes apart. Then the footage gets filed away as another strange marine anecdote, which would miss the point. The larger story is that even with orcas, one of the best-studied apex predators on the planet, there’s still plenty we don’t know about how they feed, learn and pass along tricks.
That’s why the researchers involved in the Mexico sightings are still collecting identification photos and video. They want to know which whales were present, how often the same individuals show up and whether these body-check tactics appear in other groups. In a paper in Frontiers in Ethology, the team treated the footage as a serious behavioral record, not a one-off oddity to laugh off and move on from. Fair enough. The ocean keeps producing new material, and orcas keep making sure field biologists don’t get too comfortable.
The weird part isn’t that orcas can do this. It’s how often they seem to invent new ways to do it.
That matters because orcas already have a long menu of hunting behaviors. Some groups coordinate strikes on large whales. Others herd rays into tight packs. In some regions, they trap sharks and turn them over to induce a kind of paralysis. In icy waters. They create waves to wash seals off floating ice. Different populations use different methods, and a few of those methods appear to be learned rather than hardwired. A calf doesn’t come out of the womb knowing how to make a seal lose its footing on a sheet of ice.
The sunfish footage fits that pattern. It looks violent, yes, but violence by itself doesn’t explain the sequence. A whale can hit a carcass for reasons that have more to do with practice, teaching, or shared feeding habits than with brute force alone. A younger orca might watch an adult, repeat the move later, and improve on it over time. A family group might keep using a tactic because it works and because everyone already understands the choreography. The same act can serve more than one purpose, which makes the behavior harder to sort into neat little boxes.
That’s the part scientists keep circling back to. Orcas don’t seem stuck with one fixed script. They test, copy, improvise and sometimes do all three in the same hunt. So while the sunfish ended up in pieces, the real takeaway is less tidy: the ocean’s most charismatic predator still has a few tricks nobody expected, and it’s not done surprising anyone yet.
